Often a person with a disability needs information concerning services that may be available, or sometimes a person may just need to talk, or perhaps he or she has faced discrimination, we can frequently be helpful. Recently a mother of a young man who is disabled as the result of a auto accident called for help. She wanted to explore the options for her son to find training for employment. We told her about vocational rehabilitation. We explained the process and helped her to understand what is available through this widely used program. We also discussed with her the issues surrounding health benefits. As are many, she was surprised by the risk that her son might run, if he goes back to work. We helped her understand what some options may be for him to use the Medicaid program at least for a while. Each State is different, and she must explore the options within her State.

Often the answers are not all that we wish they were, but it is important to know what is real. We can help with life planning, however, good planning begins with good information.
